There is a lot to like about having a home security system. You can monitor the status of your home by using the system’s interface, you can have it set to contact emergency personnel promptly when the alarm is activated, and you should be able to check on your house while you are away. Thanks to the developments of modern technology, security systems are not only easier to use than ever before, but they are more affordable, as well.
With all of that said, there are a couple of issues which can pop up when you have a security system in place. One of those issues has to do with your pets. If you head out of the house while your pets stay home, it’s possible that your pet could set off the alarm. Obviously, that would not be a good situation, as the alarm may cause police to come to your home only to find that nothing is amiss.
So, how do you prevent your pets from causing this problem in the first place? Here are a few tips.
A Smart Plan
When first installing your home security system, be sure to think about how your pets will move around the house while you are away. For example, you can position sensors at a height which will allow pets to move around freely on the ground without triggering the alarm. This is a simple step, but it is one of the most important ones you can take. By laying out the system in a pet-friendly manner right from the start, many potential issues down the line can be avoided.
Fine Tuning
Surveillance cameras play a major role in many security systems, and those cameras may be able to be adjusted for sensitivity. If you can do so with your cameras, try turning down the sensitivity and then test how the camera responds when a pet walks by. Hopefully, you can find a happy medium where your pets are allowed to move undetected while the camera is still sensitive enough to pick up on an unwelcome intruder.
Take Control
Most likely, you have a mobile device on you at basically all times. If that is the case, you can use your smartphone to help manage your alarm system effectively. For one thing, you may be able to tap into your camera system and see the status of the house for yourself while you are away. So, if the alarm goes off and you suspect it might be your pet that is to blame, you can look and see what is going on before taking further action. And, if you know that your pet tripped the alarm, you may be able to disarm it before the police are called out to the house.
Concerns about your pet tripping the alarm should not put you off from purchasing a home security system. As long as the system is properly designed with pets in mind, you can still enjoy the many benefits that come along with modern home security equipment.
